How Often Should You Clean Windows in Michigan? (2026)

A West Michigan pro's guide to window cleaning frequency — when to clean, why spring and fall matter, and what to skip in winter.

Short answer: Most West Michigan homes look their best with two professional window cleanings per year — one in spring (April–May) and one in fall (October–November). Lakeshore, gravel-road and high-traffic homes often add a third in mid-summer.

"How often should I clean my windows?" is the question we get more than any other in Hudsonville, Allendale and the rest of West Michigan. The honest answer depends on where you live, what's around your house, and what you want the glass to look like — but there are clear patterns we see across thousands of local homes.

The two-times-a-year rule for West Michigan

For an average suburban home off a paved road, twice a year is the sweet spot:

  • Spring (April–May) — clears off winter road salt, sand spray from plowing, tree pollen, and the gray film that builds up over the cold months.
  • Fall (October–November) — removes a summer's worth of pollen, lawn-mower dust, sprinkler hard-water spots and the first round of leaf debris.

On this schedule, you spend roughly 9–10 months of the year with glass that actually looks clean instead of slowly drifting from "fine" to "I should really do something about that."

When you should clean more often

You probably need 3–4 cleanings a year if any of these apply:

  • You live near Lake Michigan — wind-blown sand and lake spray are brutal on glass.
  • You're on or near a gravel road (common in rural Allendale and Georgetown Township) — passing traffic kicks fine dust onto windows constantly.
  • You have automatic sprinklers hitting the glass — that's the #1 cause of hard-water spots we see.
  • You have dogs, kids, or a south-facing front door — interior glass gets handprints, nose prints and slobber faster than you'd think.
  • You're listing your home for sale — buyers notice clean glass before they notice almost anything else.

What about cleaning windows in winter?

We get this question every January. Technically yes, pros can clean exterior windows down to about 25–30°F with cold-weather solutions, but for most homeowners it's not worth it. Snow, salt and freezing rain undo the work within a week or two. We recommend waiting for the spring thaw unless you're staging a home for photos.

Interior window cleaning in winter is a different story — it's a great time to do it. We're indoors, the glass is dry, and your home looks dramatically brighter on short January days.

DIY vs professional: how the math actually works

A 2,400 sqft home in Hudsonville has roughly 25–35 windows when you count both sides, screens and tracks. DIY-ing that takes most homeowners 4–6 hours, usually with streaks on the second story. A pro crew does the same home in about 90 minutes — squeegee-pulled, screen-washed, tracks detailed — for the cost of a nice dinner out.

Bundle and save

About half our spring customers add a soft-wash house wash to the same visit — the crew is already at your home with water, ladders and detergents, so it's the cheapest way to knock both off the list. Read more about the difference between soft wash and pressure washing before you book.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have my windows professionally cleaned in Michigan?
Most West Michigan homes do best on a twice-a-year schedule — once in spring after pollen and salt season, and once in fall after the leaves drop. Lakeshore homes, homes near gravel roads, and homes with kids or pets often benefit from quarterly cleanings.
Can I clean exterior windows myself in winter?
We don't recommend it. Below about 35°F, cleaning solutions freeze on the glass and squeegee rubber stiffens, leaving streaks. Pros use cold-weather-formulated solutions and pure-water poles that handle Michigan winters safely.
Why do my windows get dirty so fast after a rain?
Rain itself is mostly clean, but it picks up dust on the glass and dries into spots. Hard water from sprinklers and mineral-heavy West Michigan well water leaves the worst spotting. A proper clean removes the mineral film so the next rain rinses clear instead of spotting.
Should interior windows be cleaned as often as exterior?
Usually not. Most homeowners do interior + exterior once a year and exterior-only on the off-season visit. Homes with wood-burning fireplaces, smokers, or heavy cooking benefit from interior cleaning twice a year.
